Esophageal Cancer – Causes, Symptoms & Treatment


Esophageal Cancer is the cancer of the Esophagus i.e. food Pipe. As per various stats, Esophageal Cancer is more commonly diagnosed in men as compared to women. Esophageal Cancers can occur in any part of the Esophagus.

Factors responsible for Esophageal Cancers are:

  • Lifestyle and Dietary Habits
  • Overweight or Obese people are at higher risk
  • Smoking or Eating Tobacco
  • Alcohol Drinking
  • GERD (Gastro-esophageal Reflux Disease)
  • Barrette’s esophagus
  • Radiotherapy to other parts of the chest.

Symptoms for Esophageal Cancer:

  • Difficulty in swallowing initially to solids and then to liquids also
  • Change in Voice
  • Bouts of Cough on swallowing
  • Loss in weight
  • Heart Burn or indigestion etc

Diagnosis of Esophageal Cancer:

To confirm the diagnosis of esophageal Cancer following tests are being done:

  • Endoscopy
  • Barium Swallow

Confirmation of Esophageal Cancer:

Once cancer is confirmed, The patient needs to do the following tests for staging :

  • CT Scan and
  • PET Scan

Treatment of Esophageal Cancer:

Treatment of Esophageal Cancer depends upon the stage of the diseases. In Early stage of Esophageal Cancer patient will require only surgery and for early tumors, complete surgical removal can even provide cure. We have gained the expertise to perform Esophageal Cancer surgeries by VATS (Key-hole) or Robotic method, which has been offered to our patients for many years with excellent outcome. This approach to surgery for removal of esophagus is called Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy (MIE).

In Middle stage, combination of two or three forms of treatment i.e. Chemotherapy or chemo radiotherapy followed by surgery would be the best. However, in the advanced stage of Esophageal Cancer, wherein the disease has spread to other organs (like Lungs or Liver), treatment option recommended is chemotherapy and occasionally radiotherapy too.
